Born: Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala
Familiar forms, images and experiences are transformed into ambiguous relationships in the work of Sumedh Rajendran, where the boundaries between the human, the animal and the object remain fluid. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from the College of Fine Arts, Thiruvananthapuram, in 1994, and his Master’s degree from the Delhi College of Art in 1999.
His practice brings together and transforms disparate forms to create hybrid relationships that move between the recognisable and the imagined. These works resist fixed categories and conventional ways of seeing, while engaging with questions of identity, displacement, desire and social reality. In his sculptural works, materials such as steel, iron and ceramic are transformed into forms that further complicate these relationships.
His work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions in India and abroad and is held in major collections. He has participated in artist residencies across South Asia. Sumedh lives and works in New Delhi.
