Shaji Appukuttan, an artist from Guruvayur now based in Kochi, draws inspiration from India’s diverse landscapes to capture the complex beauty of nature. He perceives no distinction between painting human figures and trees, viewing both as vital expressions of life. His meticulous attention to detail transforms elements like trees, rivers, and mountains into sculpted alphabets of light, reflecting the deep interconnection between humans and nature. Influenced by C. Ayyappan’s work, particularly “Prethabhashanam,” Appukuttan explores the nuances of humanity’s bond with the natural world while addressing the existential implications of geopolitics on planetary survival. With seven solo exhibitions and multiple group shows, he has earned accolades, including a 2020-21 Grant from the Jackson Pollock Krasner Foundation.
