Mumbai, where she was born in 1979, provided the fertile ground for the artistic expressions of Prajakta Palav Aher. The complexities and insecurities of middle-class life have always found their way into her creative idiom. Her works are a reflection of the intricate fabric of society of which she is also a part. While much of her work is highly photorealistic, it also reflects her concern for societal issues, and works often revolve around the children of a lesser god, and reflection of the life that we often feign ignorance about.
from monsoon to monsoon
This work started in the monsoon of 2018, when I found small size old, wet grey papers in my cupboard. Touch of softness of those papers and my walk-in monsoon from home to studio made me encouraged to work on this series.
Title of the series is ‘From monsoon to monsoon’, images are inspired by waste material fallen on the sides of roads. Road which connects my home to my studio. Daily walking on the road made me observe the colours, textures, and the forms of these fallen objects in different climates and conditions. I started painting them in the monsoon season in the studio and then it continued. It was more like a routine exercise for me. Then the pandemic came, we were not supposed to go out. Walk on the road replaced by blocking views of horizontal walls of home and the imagery changed. This work is the outcome of this experience in a formal way.
