The artistic practice of Dibin Thilakan, a visual artist from Thrissur, Kerala, examines the intricate dynamics of human relationships. Woven with a potent visual lexicon, his works capture the enigma and allure that shape human connections. Inspired by folklore and cultural myths, his costumed figures animate timeless narratives. The recurring motifs in his work – such as hair, flowing, knotted, or intricately woven into structures –symbolize the tenuous and evolving nature of human bonds. His art compels viewers to explore the complexities of relationships, unravel their layers, and reflect on how inherited narratives continue to shape contemporary experiences, resonating with both personal and collective memory.
Dibin Thilakan’s engagement with theatre, including collaborations with trapeze artists, clowns, and dancers, informs his visual storytelling, infusing his compositions with movement and emotion. His works frequently dissolve the boundaries between the theatrical and the everyday, immersing the viewer in a space where reality and imagination seamlessly intertwine.
He has presented over ten solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group shows, public projects, residencies, and curated initiatives. His works are housed in several notable collections, including the museum collection of Sarmaya Collections, Mumbai.
Dibin Thilakan holds an MFA in Painting from the SN School of Arts and Communication, University of Hyderabad, and a BFA from the Government College of Fine Arts, Thrissur.
