P.S. Jalaja’s artwork explores the collective history of humanity, emphasizing the spectrum of emotions that shape our experiences. Holding an MFA in painting, she offers a counter vision that captures both joy and sorrow across diverse human narratives. Her series, “Boat People,” addresses themes of human displacement due to ethnic cleansing and border conflicts, using the overloaded boat—a symbol of tragedy— to reflect on contemporary struggles, particularly those faced by individuals fleeing wars in Syria and Iraq. Jalaja’s personal connection to these global issues drives her art, which serves as a poignant visual narrative of shared histories and the ongoing pain of displacement and loneliness.
