Anupama Alias focuses her artistic practice on gender and femininity, using diverse representational strategies to challenge traditional notions of identity. Her work serves as an ethnographic narrative, telling stories of others through her own experiences. In her piece “Bhavitha” (The One Who Imagined), she explores the performative aspects of gender through the creation of faces and masks. Anupama’s art particularly highlights women in transitional phases of life, especially during their middle years, moving beyond the adolescent focus prevalent in much contemporary work. With an MFA in Painting from S N School of Arts and Communication, University of Hyderabad, and numerous accolades, she aims to uncover the complexities of female identity, emphasizing the journey from girlhood to womanhood and the nuances of existence in between.
